FAQ: How do I add/upload images or other related files (eg, Adobe Acrobat PDFs) to the Saga content management system?

Uploading/Adding Files

Choose the Media Library tab in Saga Content Management (Saga CM), browse to a file on your local computer or server share, give it a new name if desired, and Upload.

Note: Currently, the Saga Media Library does not use the same permissions system based on topics like the rest of Saga CM. Accordingly, all Saga users have the ability to add/replace files of any name to the Media Library. To make sure you don't replace someone else's file, give yours a unique name. If Saga warns you that your new file will replace an existing file and you are not absolutely sure you are replacing your own file, give your file a different name and don't replace the existing file.

Naming Files

The file name may include letters, numbers, underscores (_) and hyphens (-) as well as a period followed by an extension that denotes the file type. File names can not have spaces or other punctuation marks. The media library currently supports JPEG (.jpg), GIF (.gif), and PNG (.png) images as well as Adobe Portable Document Format (.pdf) and Microsoft Word (.doc) files. To add files larger than 2MB, please contact the Saga administrators.

An example of an allowed, though not necessarily recommended, file name is "My_37th-Groovy_Photo.jpg", which would be stored here "/media/m/y/My_37th-Groovy_Photo.jpg".

It makes good sense to group related images/files together in the Media Library by using a consistent naming system for your files. For example, images for the advising website might all be prefixed with "advising_", so you would have "advising_some-image.jpg", "advising_some-PDF.pdf", etc. With such consistent naming, Saga will store all these files in the same "/media/a/d/" directory making it easier for you to browse/find existing files in the library.

Embedding/Linking to Files in Other Saga Content Items

Once the file is uploaded, Saga CM will show you example HTML code to embed that new image in a Saga content item (ie, an <img> tag) or link to (ie, an <a> tag). You can copy the example code, move to the edit view of a content item, toggle to HTML Source view and paste the copied tag. You can also use the WYSIWYG Insert/Modify Image (for images) and Insert Web Link (for PDFs/Word DOCs) tools, but then you only need to copy/paste the file's web address (eg, /media/p/s/psu_example.jpg, /media/e/x/example.pdf), not the whole <a> or <img> tag. Then preview your content item to see how it looks. When adding new images/related files, it's handy to have Saga CM open in two browser windows/tabs, so you can easily copy and paste the tag from the Media Library to the content item you are working on.

Note: you do not need a fully-qualify the location of files in the Media Library when linking/embedding/linking them in Saga content items, ie, use:

/media/m/y/My_37th-Groovy_Photo.jpg

not:

http://www.pdx.edu/media/m/y/My_37th-Groovy_Photo.jpg

But, if you need to embed/link to a file in the Saga Media Library from a webpage outside Saga, you will need to use the fully-qualified location.

Formatting Files

Images

Saga does not automatically crop/resize images, so you will need to format them to an appropriate size/resolution for web display using your own image editing software (eg, Photoshop or similar) before you upload.

Adobe Acrobat PDFs

Adobe Acrobat files should be formatted to minimize file size for speedy web delivery.
