Teams compete, P:EAR wins

Charged with the task of raising funds for P:EAR, a local nonprofit serving homeless and transitional youth, PSU undergrads in Jeremy Short's Strategic Management for Nonprofits class created and executed two separate fundraising events: a golf tournament and a cocktail event that combined to raise over $11,000. No previous class had ever raised more than $1,500.

“These students believed in P:EAR, and each group believed the unique fundraiser they created would be more successful for P:EAR,” said Jeremy Short, assistant professor in the School of Business Administration. “This was a case where friendly competition became a win-win for all parties involved.”

The class consisted of 18 students from majors as diverse as accounting, architecture, Japanese, mathematics, political science, psychology, and sculpture. Participation in the class fulfills a Senior Capstone requirement-the culminating course in PSU's undergraduate general education curriculum. Students work in teams under the supervision of faculty and community partners on community-based topics or projects. U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Portland State's Capstone program as one of the best in the nation for the third year in a row.
