R. Kevin Hill, Philosophy faculty, was an invited participant in the workshop "Nietzsche and Kantian Ethics," which was part of a three-year research project titled "Nietzsche and Modern Moral Philosophy" funded by the United Kingdom's Arts and Humanities Research Council. The workshop was held at University of Southampton April 2-3.

Ortiz), at an Author Meets Critics session at the Pacific Sociological Association annual conference, San Diego, April 8-11. He also presented a co-authored paper titled "Generation, Underemployment and Mexican-Origin Workers' Labor Market Incorporation."

Heejun Chang, Martin Lafrenz, and Il-won Jung, Geography faculty, and Miguel Figliozzi, Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty, presented a paper titled "Climate Change and Urban Flooding: Impacts on Transportation Infrastructure" at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers in Las Vegas. Jung and Chang also presented the paper "Quantifying Uncertainty of Climate Change on Regional Water Resources using Multi-Model Ensemble."

Jeffer Daykin, University Studies, presented “Japan as a Modern World Power at the A-Y-P” at the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild conference titled Meet Me at the Fair: Exploring the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, March 7. The conference was held in Seattle to celebrate the centennial of the 1909 World's Fair, which was also held in the city.

Mike Burton, Extended Studies vice provost, presented “Sustainability and Regional Governance in Portland, Oregon” to the mayor and city council in Quebec City, March 16-17. While in Quebec City he also gave the keynote speech “Towards Sustainable Communities: Smart City Trends” at a Forum on Mobilization for Action, Vivre en Ville, and conducted a workshop on “Action Steps to Create Smart Cities: Smart Growth, Smart Grid, Smart Ecosystems.”
