High-achieving Chicano/Latino students from Portland State University will be honored at the tenth-annual Chicano/Latino Scholarship Gala this Saturday, November 4, 2006. Over 600 community members, parents, teachers and students are expected to be in attendance at the Oregon Convention Center (777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr., Blvd.).

The event sponsored by Portland State’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will award scholarships of $1000–$5000 for academic achievement and community involvement to 27 of PSU’s stellar Chicano/Latino students (listed below). The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and speakers at 7:30 p.m.

The gala includes cocktails, dinner, dancing and celebrity guest speaker Willie Barcena, a 12-year stand-up comedy veteran with film and television appearances that include “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Latin Palooza” and “Moesha.” FOX 12’s Toni Martinez will serve as “Master of Ceremonies.”

The gala serves as the primary scholarship fundraising event to support Portland State Chicano/Latino students. The event recognizes the achievements of the Chicano/Latino community and provides an opportunity for corporations, organizations and individuals to invest in the education of the fastest-growing ethnic population in Oregon and the United States.
