The Academic and Student Recreation Center at Portland State University has won an Outstanding Sports Facility Award from the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). The award will be presented on April 13 at the 2011 NIRSA Annual Conference and Recreational Sports Exposition in New Orleans.
The award is presented for creative, innovative designs of new, renovated, or expanded collegiate recreational facilities. "Each winner is considered a standard or model by which other collegiate recreational facilities should be measured," NIRSA states on its Web site.
PSU's Rec Center was completed in January 2010, and sits on the former site of the University's Portland Center for Advanced Technology, 1800 SW Sixth Avenue. The center also houses the School of Social Work on the sixth floor and the Oregon University System Chancellor's Office a floor below.
The facility has a two-court gym, a running track, a synthetic floor gym suitable for floor hockey and soccer, an aquatic complex, a bouldering wall, and much more. The building earned a LEED Gold certification for its numerous sustainable features, including rainwater capture for use in the building's lavatories, close access to mass transit, rooftop solar cells, and a system that generates electricity from the center's aerobic exercise equipment.
Student fees paid for much of the building. The rest was funded through an innovative mix of retail and community tenants, including the City of Portland. The project was designed and built by Yost Grube Hall Architecture and Skanska.
NIRSA, established in 1950 and headquartered in Corvallis, is a leading resource for professional and student development, education, and research in collegiate recreational sports.
