Excellence in community-based teaching, learning, and partnerships will be recognized at the ninth annual Civic Engagement Awards reception, Wednesday, May 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Multicultural Center, 228 Smith Union. Provost Roy Koch will present the awards following Harry Boyte's keynote speech "We Are the Ones? The Next Stage of Civic Engagement." RSVP to the Center for Academic Excellence at caestaff@pdx.edu or call 5-5642.

Boyte is also scheduled to give a free lecture and discussion, "Citizen Solutions: Building the New Civic Movement," on May 19 at 2 p.m. in 338 Smith Union. Boyte is founder and co-director of the Center for Democracy and Citizenship in the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at University of Minnesota. Recognized as an international leader on issues of civic education and development, Boyte is the author of The Citizen Solution: How You Can Make a Difference (2008).

At the May 20 reception, awards will be presented to PSU faculty and staff and community partners for excellence in Community-based Teaching and Learning, Departmental Civic Engagement, Partnerships for Student Learning, and Community-based Research. The event is sponsored by the Center for Academic Excellence and the Carnegie Conversation Series.
