(Portland, Ore.) April 12, 2011 – New Avenues for Youth and the kings of ice cream were at Portland State University (PSU) campus Tuesday handing out free ice cream as part of "Free Cone Day."

Students in PSU's Opera program also surprised the crowd by showing up and performing the "Ice Cream Sextet" from their upcoming opera "Street Scene" next to the ice cream carts on the Urban Plaza.

New Avenues for Youth will open a second Ben & Jerry's PartnerShop on PSU campus in May. The PartnerShop provides real-world work experience training for homeless and at-risk youth.

Six years ago, New Avenues for Youth opened its first Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream PartnerShop in downtown Portland. The shop provides real-world work experience and opportunities to build invaluable employment and life skills through job training and entrepreneurial education programs. Nearly 130 youth have gained work experience in the Ben & Jerry's PartnerShop Training Program and earned $500,000 in wages since its grand opening in September 2004.

The location for the second PartnerShop will be in the PSU Urban Center, located at SW 6th Avenue and Mill Street. By opening a second scoop shop at the heart of Oregon's largest university, New Avenues will be able to provide increased job training opportunities for homeless youth and expose them to post-secondary educational opportunities. PSU is invested in furthering the mission of New Avenues for Youth by not only offering this location, but through the creation of partnerships with their School of Social Work and Business School. These partnerships will increase the impact the PartnerShop has in the lives of homeless and at-risk youth.
