News: PSU Symphony Kicks Off 2008 Season with Concert Featuring Matt Haimovitz, January 26

The Portland State University Symphony, under the direction of Ken Selden, PSU professor, proudly presents its Winter 2008 concert "Juxtapositions," with internationally acclaimed cellist Matt Haimovitz on Saturday, January 26, at 8 p.m. in the Newmark Theater (Antoinette Hatfield Hall, 1111 SW Broadway).

Cellist Matt Haimovitz has inspired classical music lovers and won over countless new listeners to the genre by bringing his artistry to concert halls and clubs, outdoor festivals and intimate coffee houses. Through his visionary approach, Haimovitz is re-defining what it means to be an artist for the 21st century. The PSU student group, Instrumental Music Alliance, is sponsoring Haimovitz's performance.

The concert includes Rihm's Ricercare in memoriam Luigi Nono (U.S. Premiere), Schumann's Cello Concerto with Matt Haimovitz, Johanson's Quick as a Wink (U.S. Premiere), and Brahms' Double Concerto with Andy Simionescu, violin, and Matt Haimovitz, cello.

Tickets prices are $15 for adults; $10 for seniors; $8 for students; and PSU faculty, staff and students are admitted free with PSU ID. Tickets are available at the PSU Box Office (1825 SW Broadway), by calling 503-725-3307 or at Antoinette Hatfield Hall (1111 SW Broadway).

Matt Haimovitz made his debut in 1984 at the age of 13, as soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. At 17 he made his first recording, performing the Saint-Sans, Lalo, and Bruch concerti with James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for Deutsche Grammophon (Universal Classics). Haimovitz has since gone on to perform on the world's most esteemed stages, with such orchestras and conductors as the Berlin Philharmonic with James Levine, the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta, the English Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim, the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin, and the Cleveland Orchestra with Charles Dutoit.

Portland State University Symphony
The mission of the PSU Symphony Orchestra is to contribute to the educational, cultural and musical life of the university community and the city of Portland. In its inaugural season under the direction of Ken Selden, PSU professor, the PSU Symphony was awarded First Prize in Adventurous Programming from ASCAP and the American Symphony Orchestra League. The orchestra works collaboratively with faculty, Oregon Symphony members and internationally known guest artists, and hosts a yearly concerto competition.
