News: Portland State Library Discussion: “No Bombs, No Planes: Picasso’s Guernica,” Oct. 5

What: Portland State University Library is participating in “The September Project,” an international program sponsored by American libraries that explores social issues of peace and democracy in the post-9/11 world. The talk will explore the aesthetic and historical significance of Pablo Picasso’s controversial painting “Guernica.”

Leading the discussion are Portland State’s Sue Taylor and Allen Hauser. Taylor, a professor of art history, will explore the artistic relevance of this provocative work of modern art. Hauser, a reference technician and adjunct professor, will describe the historical impact of the bombing of the Basque city, Gernika, in regards to the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Accompanying the discussion are the Facsimile Preliminary Sketches of Picasso’s “Guernica.”

When: Friday, October 5, from 7 – 9 p.m.

Where: Portland State Millar Library, second floor (1875 Park Avenue). Facsimile Preliminary Sketches of Picasso’s “Guernica” are on display in the New Book Section through October 10, 2007.

Cost: Admission is free and open to the public.
