On September 16, 2011, Portland State University will launch its official presence on Instagram, a free photo-sharing mobile application and social network, to engage with current and prospective students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the community. Instagram enables users to snap a photo, apply a digital filter to it, and share it with other Instagram users they are connected to as well as other social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
PSU’s Instagram site features exclusive, behind-the-scenes look into campus life at Portland State such as move-in day and an afternoon in the Park Blocks. PSU continues to expand its presence in the social media realm with active participation on other social sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo, and Foursquare. Compared to its peers, PSU’s social media presence continues to be the most vibrant and engaging in the state.
In partnership with PSU Athletics, PSU is launching Instagram by running a photo contest to coincide with this year’s Viking Days. Users are encouraged to show what “Portland State of Mind” means to them by tagging their photos with #PSOM, #PortlandState, and #GoViks. The first 100 submissions will win an exclusive Portland State of Mind T-Shirt and all submissions will be eligible to win three grand prizes including a 32 GB Apple iPod Touch.
