PSU's Native American Studies (NAS) Program was inaugurated in 2004 and presently offers a Minor in Native American Studies. NAS is an interdisciplinary program with coursework drawn from Anthropology, Art, English, History, Linguistics, Political Science, and other departments and schools. The substantive focus of this curriculum is the histories and cultures of American Indians, Alaska native, and Native Hawaiians. The minor is meant to serve three primary constituencies:
This program prepares students to work for tribal governments and native-oriented organizations as professionals, or as informed professionals in organizations not specifically dedicated to native issues, but which interact with tribal governments on a government-to-government or business basis. REIL CertificateThe Program also sponsors an Undergraduate Certificate in Revitalizing Endangered Indigenous Languages (REIL). Interested persons may apply for admission any term either as undergraduate or as postbaccalaureate. The REIL Certificate is issued to undergraduates only upon completion of the B.A. or B.S. degree. See catalog or Admissions office for deadlines and admission requirements. A maximum of 12 credits taken prior to admission can be counted toward the Certificate. For non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL score of at least 550 is required. SCOPE OF STUDY: This certificate will provide fundamental training for language revitalization, so that interested students will understand some main causes for language loss and factors involved in language maintenance; will prepare these students to work with Native communities and organizations on language revitalization; and will teach the critically important skills of the development of language materials and language assessment tools. ONE of the following: NAS404: Cooperative Education/Internship (4) [CERTIFICATE COMPLETION REQUIREMENT] PORTFOLIO Students in the program will develop a portfolio, which includes field notes, journals, feedback from the community and final refection papers (15-20 pages). Certificate Director will be responsible for assessing students’ certificate completion. TOTAL: 32 credit hours ADVISING No later than the end of the first quarter after admission to the program, the student is required to consult with advisor/director to select the appropriate courses and areas of concentration.
