To apply for an admission with Portland State University, please visit the University Admissions, Registrations, & Records website for information and application to apply. You must apply to Portland State University to take classes. To be considered a music major or minor, you must pass the Department Entrance Audition and be officially admitted to the University. Students who are admitted to the University through a quick entry application process are not considered a music major or minor.

The Department of Music at PSU offers 13 degree options for both undergraduate and graduate students. The BA and BS degrees offer a broader liberal arts education, while the BM degrees offers a more music intensive track. Students pursuing a career in music education can adapt their degrees to prepare them for K-12 certification. Graduate students can earn a MM in Performance or Conducting. For educators looking for an advanced degree with more of an academic emphasis, the MA or MS in Music degrees are an option.

     How to Apply

    Admission to the Department of Music Undergraduate Degrees study is selective and is granted on the  probability of success in the intended field of study. Failure to supply complete and accurate information will subject you to the University's policies governing academic dishonesty.

    Applicants must submit two separate application packets:

    Application Packet Two*

    Return the following items to the Office of Admissions, Registration, and Records as a complete packet:

    Return the following items to the Department of Music as a complete packet:

    1. University Application for Undergraduate Admission

    2. One official transcript (in a sealed [closed] envelope from the issuing institution) from each institution attended.(A transcript from PSU is not required.)

    2. One unofficial transcript from each institution attended, including Portland State University if attended.

    Undergraduate Audition Requirements

    After submission of a completed Department of Music Application, you will be scheduled for an in-person audition or you can submit an un-edited DVD audition for consideration. The following are instrumental and vocal audition requirements. Should you have any additional questions about your area audition requirements, please contact your area coordinator. To find your area coordinator's contact information, please click on your audition requirements link. Your application to the Department of Music will not be finalized until you have completed your audition.
