The Department of Music organizes and hosts several special programs throughout the year for intensive study in specific areas. These programs are often open to local music performers and educators, as well as to aspiring young musicians and the general public.
At Portland State, students can study the clarinet as their principle subject within the framework of several different programs.

The Coordinate Movement Program is designed to give pianists a better understanding of the physical processes involved in playing and how to use this knowledge to their advantage.
Summer Choral Conducting Workshop
Enjoy a week at the beach with other choral enthusiasts and learn to communicate sensitive musical ideas through visual, tactile, auditory means. Rodney Eichenberger's enthusiasm takes the exploration of choral conducting technique and performance artistry in exciting new directions. Lectures, rehearsals, master class conducting, and movement activities assist in the development of musicianship and vocal skills.
Opera
Our opera program offers training and invaluable performing experience to the singer-actor. In the opera workshop course students prepare opera scenes musically and dramatically for performance. They learn skills in stagecraft, movement and acting for singers. Experts from the opera community coach students in master classes. Our annual opera production offers students many opportunities to learn how to prepare a role, work with a stage director and conductor, work on stage with costumes and props and to sing with an orchestra.
Young Singers Workshop
This workshop is designed for high school students who are interested in pursuing music and vocal performance in their future. The intensive five day workshop includes classes in acting for singers, diction, choir and vocal technique. Each student receives a private voice lesson and has opportunities to sing in Master Classes offered by members of the Portland State University Voice Faculty. The week concludes with a performance showcasing the accomplishments of the students.
