Assistant Professor – Director of Choral Activities

The Department of Music is located in the cultural district of Portland, only three blocks from the Portland Center for the Performing Arts. It maintains close ties with the major musical institutions of the city, and students have many opportunities to interact with professionals in the community. Faculty members in the Department of Music are internationally recognized performers, conductors, composers and scholars. The urban location and mission of the University allows students to pursue innovative options in their musical education. The Department of Music serves over 300 music majors, and offers the BA, BS, and BM degrees at the undergraduate level, and the MAT/MST and MM graduate degrees. Portland State University is the largest university in the Oregon State System of Higher Education and has an enrollment of approximately 28,000 students.

Position Summary

The Department of Music at Portland State University is seeking candidates for a 1.0 FTE tenure track position as Director of Choral Activities at the Assistant Professor level, beginning Fall 2010. The successful candidate will conduct the University Choir and the University Chamber Choir. The successful candidate will also supervise Graduate Teaching Assistants and actively recruit singers for the vocal program. Other duties will be assigned to fulfill Departmental needs and may include teaching in the areas of choral conducting, choral methods, choral literature, choral arranging, pedagogy, conducting fundamentals or any additional subjects within the successful candidate’s expertise and interests. The appointment will also entail sustaining a continuous and cumulative record of creative/scholarly activities. Community outreach will be an important aspect of the position.

Qualifications

D.M.A. or PhD. required. Experience coordinating and developing choral programs at the collegiate level and a successful secondary school choral music experience are required. Evidence of professional activity at a nationally competitive level is required. Active scholarship in an appropriate area is expected of the candidate.

Student Positions:

Student Office Assistants
Positions are for students with a federal work-study award

Purpose of the Positions:
The Department of Music office is looking for student office assistants to provide clerical support to the office for reception (both phone and in person), work on projects at the direction of the Office Coordinator and support other general department operations (e.g., typing, photocopying, faxing, filing, and errands). The most important part of this job is to assist faculty, staff, students and the public in a courteous and helpful manner.

Duties:
Performs reception duties in a friendly and sincere way by answering office telephones, routing calls to appropriate person, taking messages, greeting office visitors, answering routine questions or referring questions to the appropriate person.

Scheduling appointments for students to meet with music advisors.

Work on projects assigned by the Executive Assistant to the Department Chair and Office Coordinator.

Successful candidates for these positions are reliable, responsible, self motivated, work independently, have excellent oral & interpersonal communication skills. They are able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks; as well as take instructions from multiples sources.


Working Conditions: Environment is one of frequent public contact via telephone, email and in-person. Mobility is necessary to unlock rooms, deliver errands, or post notices. There may be unpredictable interruptions. This office must maintain a professional look.
