BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN
EDUCATION DEGREE 2008 - 2009 Bulletin
The Bachelor of Music Education (BMEd) degree at Portland
State University is a 4-year professional degree that prepares students to
enter the Graduate Teaching Education Program (GTEP) where they complete the
Oregon teacher certification process and may earn an MEd if desired. This degree is an intensive,
cross-curricular program, preparing students in choral, instrumental, and
general music teaching techniques from grades k-12.
This preparation is aligned with Oregon standards for music
endorsement and the Oregon teaching credential is currently accepted in 38
other states. Course requirements for
the degree are available on the Music Dept. website and in the Music Office in
hard copy.
Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Music
Education need to:
- Audition
and be accepted into the Department of Music on their major instrument or
voice
- Meet
with the Music Education advisor (Professor Debbie Glaze) in their
freshman year and get a course planning worksheet for Music Education
- Successfully
complete the first two years of Music Theory, Sight-Singing and Ear
Training, Class or private piano, 6 units of applied music lessons, and 6
units of large ensemble
- Consider
volunteering in a music education setting, either public or private
- Consider
joining the CMENC chapter to network with other music education students
and to become involved in the field
PUBLIC SCHOOL
LICENSURE
Teacher licensure at Portland State University requires a
bachelor’s degree in music education OR a bachelor’s degree in Music with
completed prerequisites, followed by a fifth-year teacher education
program. All prerequisites must be
completed before application to the Graduate Teaching (GTEP) Program will be
considered. Students in the GTEP Program
spend three terms of increased student teaching in the public schools, combined
with coursework at the university throughout the year. For more information on the GTEP Program,

To be considered for admission to the program an individual
must submit evidence of the following to the Graduate School of Education:
- A
baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major
in music education or music and required prerequisites completed.
- A
minimum cumulative 3.00 GPA
- Three
letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to personal,
professional, and musical skills
- A
personal letter indicating goals and interests in teaching music
- A
recommendation from the coordinator of Music Education in the Music Dept.
at PSU
- Successful
completion of standardized qualifying examinations (CBEST. PRAXIS)
