She undertakes principal instrument teaching and chamber music coaching, is responsible for the weekly Clarinet Studio Class, oversees the Woodwind Area Recitals, and teaches Music History courses. Students receive tuition in their principal instrument, orchestral studies, chamber music, reed-making, and other skills.
Dr. Heilmair applies a systematic training program that focuses on building a strong foundation for performance and teaching skills. Among many other aspects, the training specifically addresses the issues of technical facility (fingers, tonguing, posture), sound quality (tone color, tone volume, embouchure, breathing), and the understanding of musical concepts and styles.
The Clarinet Studio Class regularly addresses topics related to clarinet literature, clarinet repertory, instruments, etc. An internal short class concert and audition practice take place every week. Furthermore, Barbara Heilmair invites nationally or internationally renowned clarinetists on a regular basis to hold master classes and recitals at PSU.
PSU clarinet students have access to a variety of performance opportunities. Dr. Heilmair pays intense attention to chamber music, coaching clarinet ensembles and mixed chamber ensembles every term. A range of instruments can be borrowed from PSU, including several bass and Eb clarinets.
The weekly Woodwind Area Recital showcases solo and ensemble performances of woodwind students. Portland State University clarinet ensembles appear frequently outside the university. Among other venues, the young clarinetists recently played at the Portland MAC Club, the Oregon Symphony Prelude Series, and the Buffet Crampon/ Vandoren Clarinet Ensembles Festival in Seattle.
Furthermore, the university offers the PSU Concert Band, PSU Wind Symphony, and PSU Symphony as a platform for performances. Ensembles at PSU
