How to Apply

BSME Admission Overview
Students in the BSME program must be registered students of Portland State University, and must maintain good standing in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. PSU maintains a web site with information on admission to the University. Students who have taken relevant courses at other institutions should consult the on-line information about transfer admission.
Students may declare Mechanical Engineering as their major at any time after enrolling at Portland State University. However, Mechanical Engineering majors must be formally admitted before they will (1) be allowed to enroll in restricted upper-division courses and (2) be graduated from the Mechanical Engineering program.
Mechanical engineering students are eligible for several scholarships. Refer to the Scholarship Handbook (available in the Dean's Office) for a detailed list of scholarship opportunities. Application forms for scholarships are available in the MCECS Dean's Office and online.
Students from Other Institutions
Students transferring from other institutions who want to be formally admitted to the mechanical engineering program must:
- Meet all eligibility requirements.
- Apply for admission to PSU.
- Apply for program admission to the department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
- Have an official copy of their transcripts sent to the department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
- Have one official copy of their transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions.
Please consult PSU's web site on transfer admission. Students transfering from local community colleges can see a list of common equivilancies here.
Admission Criteria
To be eligible for admission to the mechanical engineering degree program, each student must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Complete, with a minimum grade of C and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the following courses:
- Ch 221, CH 227
- EAS 101*, 211, 212, 215
- ECE 241, 241L
- Mth 251, 252, 261, 254, 256
- Ph 221, 222, 223, 214, 215, 216
- Sp 100
- Wr 121
- Freshman Inquiry**(15 credits)
The preceding list (59 credits total) is a subset of the complete list of course requirements for admission, which is given below.
*As of Fall 2010 the Freshman sequence ME 120, ME 121 and ME 122 is equivalent to the combination of EAS 101 and EAS 115. EAS 101 and EAS 115 will be accepted during the transition to the new curriculum.
**Transfer students enterring PSU with 30 or more credits can complete Wr 121 and either Comm 100 or Comm 220 instead of Freshman Inquiry. Those students must still meet the 39 credit requirement for Arts and Letters or Social Science classes.
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.33 in all engineering and computer science coursework. For transfer students, this includes engineering classes taken at other institutions.
- Complete a minimum of 90 credits.
Students may submit their application during an academic term in which they are completing the preceding list of course requirements. For example, if you are taking EAS 215, Physics 223/216, and ME 241 during the Spring quarter, and you have otherwise met all application requirements, you can (and should) apply during that Spring quarter. Applications will be rejected from students who either have not met the minimum admission requirements, or who are, at the time of application, not in the process of completing those admission requirements.
Lower Division Course Requirements
Majors in mechanical engineering must complete the following lower division University and Departmental degree requirements. Any deviation from the required courses, including engineering and mathematics course substitutions, must be approved in writing by the chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
