The Middle East Studies Center offers workshops and seminars for educators that increase participants’ knowledge of the region and support pedagogical approaches to global education that promote critical thinking, tolerance, and respect.

Beginning in December, 2010, a wave of demonstrations, protests, and revolutions spread throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Over two years later, the world is still trying to understand what led to this moment, why these events occurred, and how they will ultimately impact the region. By exploring these questions, this workshop will provide teachers with a context and framework for teaching about the Arab Uprisings. Optional credit available through PSU Continuing Education Department in the Graduate School of Education. 21 Professional Development Units available. This workshop is free. International films transport an audience to new lands and provide viewers with unique insight into other cultures. Through this three day workshop, teachers will increase their understanding of film as an education tool to inspire interdisciplinary learning about world history and cultures, current events, and other global concepts. This workshop will prepare K-12 educators to teach about current forms of protest in Iran including the 2009 Green Revolution, the use of social media, and various forms of pop culture. Through interactive and participatory sessions, teachers will increase their knowledge about Iran and explore teaching strategies that encourage students to think critically. It addressed how the involvement of the US in Iraq and Afghanistan after the 9/11 attacks can be used to teach about World History II, Contemporary Events, US Foreign Policy, Middle East Studies, Conflict Resolution; Gain new teaching resources and techniques for classroom application from other teachers.
