11594 HIS 487/587 PALESTINE & ISRAEL
MW 14:00 - 15:50 Robson L.

This course traces the history of Palestine and Israel from the
mid-nineteenth century to the present, focusing particularly on the
genesis of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the construction of two
opposing nationalist narratives attached to the same geographical space.
In this class, we will examine the political, social, economic and
cultural history of the region and trace the concurrent development of
Palestinian and Israeli national identities during the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries. We will also consider the historiography of the
conflict and investigate some of the most prominent scholarly debates
surrounding Palestinian and Israeli nationalist narratives.
