Middle East Studies Center Scholarships

The Middle East Studies Center invites applications for three scholarships for study of Middle East language and area studies at Portland State:

Gary and Patricia Leiser Scholarship in Middle Eastern Languages

 Criteria: Scholarships granted by the Middle East Studies Center for the study of Middle Eastern languages. Current enrollment in Arabic, Persian, or Turkish language is required. Minimum GPA is 3.25. Applicants must be US citizens and demonstrate a serious interest in the Middle East by taking courses related to the region, although not necessarily a Middle East Studies degree program. Applicants must be enrolled full-time or accepted for full-time enrollment at Portland State University as degree-seeking students.

Application Process: Submit the Scholarship Application Form, an essay of 250 words maximum on how this scholarship will help in reaching academic, career, and/or personal goals, unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, and a letter of recommendation from your language instructor or area studies or academic adviser. Scholarship awards are determined by the Middle East Studies Center Faculty Advisory Committee chaired by the Director of the Middle East Studies Center.

Deadline: Submit a completed application to the Middle East Studies Center by Friday, March 29, 2013

 


Elizabeth Ducey Scholarship

Amount: Up to $600; average award of $200

Criteria: Applications accepted from any student intending to study for a specialty in Middle East Studies. Available to help finance study abroad. Students must be enrolled in and making satisfactory progress in a Middle Eastern language. Applicants must be enrolled full-time or accepted for full-time enrollment at Portland State University as degree-seeking students.

Application Process: Submit the Scholarship Application Form, an essay of 250 words maximum on how this scholarship will help in reaching academic, career, and/or personal goals, unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, and a letter of recommendation from your language instructor or area studies or academic adviser. Scholarship awards are determined by the Middle East Studies Center Faculty Advisory Committee chaired by the Director of the Middle East Studies Center.

John Damis Middle East Studies Scholarship

Amount: $500 – $1000

Criteria: Scholarships granted by the Middle East Studies Center for undergraduate or graduate students of PSU International Studies and Political Science majors with Middle East focus. Overall grade point average of 3.00.

Application Process: Submit the Scholarship Application Form, an essay of 250 words maximum on how this scholarship and focus on Middle East-related coursework will help in reaching academic, career, and/or personal goals, unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, and a letter of recommendation from your academic adviser. Scholarship awards are determined by the Middle East Studies Center Faculty Advisory Committee chaired by the Director of the Middle East Studies Center. Applicants must be enrolled full-time or accepted for full-time enrollment at Portland State University as degree-seeking students.
