Language Study

Portland State University has strong language programs through the Department of World Languages & Literatures in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish.

Arabic

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers courses in Arabic language and literature leading to a Major and Minor in Arabic Language and Literature. The Arabic program includes four years of modern standard Arabic, common spoken Arabic, and advanced coursework in classical modern Arabic poetry, folk literature of the Arabs, and translation of major Arabic works. In addition, the program offers a special course on media Arabic. Arabic language courses are offered year round including the summer session.

Hebrew

Two years of modern Hebrew are offered.

Persian

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers courses in Persian language and literature leading to an Minor in Persian Language and Literature. The Persian program includes three years of Persian language instruction as well as Persian literature and culture courses.

Turkish

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers courses in Turkish language and literature leading to an Minor in Turkish Language. The Turkish program includes three years of modern standard Turkish, and culture courses on topics such as Turkish literature, film, popular culture, and gender.

Pashto and Kurdish language instruction are offered as part of the Heritage Language Initiative.
