Forerunners (2004), is an Israeli documentary about three members of the national women’s soccer team, a Mizrachi Jew, an immigrant from the Ukraine, and a Christian Palestinian, and how struggles with family, society, and self builds a positive team environment. Conversation will revolve around themes of youth and diversity.

In Hebrew with English subtitles

Featuring a discussion with Alon Raab, lecturer in Religious Studies at the University of California at Davis. Raab coedited the book, Soccer in the Middle East, which explores the multifaceted connections between soccer and society including questions of class, gender, and nationalism

This is the second film of the series. The first film, Offside (2006), A smart comedy illustrating the fight for women’s rights in Iran,  will be shown on October 12, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Middle East Studies Center at Portland State University promotes understanding of the people, cultures, languages and religions of the Middle East. As a National Resource Center for Middle East Studies under the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI program, the Center serves as a resource on issues pertaining to the Middle East through activities that reach students and scholars, as well as businesses, educators, and the media. The medium of film offers incomparable insight into its subject. The Middle East Studies Center’s film series showcases the rich tradition of cinema in the Middle East and provides opportunities for audiences to view the region in new ways and to engage with potentially transformative ideas about the Middle East. The 2012-13 film series focuses on the theme, Being Young in the Middle East. October's screenings engage with 'Sport in the Middle East'.
