PORTLAND -- Dozens of students spent part of their weekend working to install a "green roof" on the Portland State University campus.
A crane was used to lift plants and other materials onto the roof of Cramer Hall. About 30 students helped to assemble the 3,000-square-foot eco-roof and install the plants.
The work was part of a living laboratory for civil and environmental engineering classes, according to project manager Austin Hudson.
“This allows us to more effectively assess how the native and non-native plants are compared against each other,” Hudson said.
The students said it was a learning experience that would last for years, as their eco-roof continues to grow.
