LING 415/515: Phonetics

This course introduces students to the scientific study of sounds used in languages of the world. Students will be trained in the classification, the perceptual discrimination, and the production of linguistic sounds. In addition, they will become familiar with the acoustic record of those sounds and develop some skill at reading spectrograms. Although the concentration will be on English and more familiar languages (Asian and European), we will also look at a number of less familiar languages.
