LING 413/513: Semantics

An introduction to the study of meaning in Linguistics (with influences from formal psychology, philosophy of language, and formal logic). The course addresses the general questions: What is meaning, and how is it structured? How does linguistic meaning relate to linguistic form, on one hand, and to language use on the other? How do linguistic expressions connect to the phenomena—objects, events, situations, and properties—in the external world?

Prerequisites: LING 390, Recommended: LING 411/511 or LING 492

Major Assignments: Homework assignments; final examination; short paper/book report (undergraduates); term paper (graduates).
