LING 411/511: Syntax

Course Description: Introduction to modern syntactic theory and research. Main topics include the goals of linguistic theory, syntactic structures and how to represent them in English and other languages. In addition, the course focuses on methods of investigation and argumentation used to establish a syntactic theory.

Constitutes a foundation for advanced work in syntax and semantics, provides background for understanding much recent work in applied linguistics and in such allied fields as psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics.

Prerequisites: LING 492 Structure of English is strongly recommended before taking Syntax.
Prerequisite: Ling 390 and one other course in linguistics
