SBA Professors Present Research at International Conference on Sustainability
Drs. Jeanne Enders and Pamela Tierney presented their research paper "Designing for Sustainability: Applying Management Theory to the Pursuit of Sustainable Design" at the second annual International Conference on Business and Sustainability held in Portland on October 15-17, 2008. Albrecht Enders, Vice President of Product Development for A-dec, Inc. also co-authored the paper.
The paper presents a model wherein sustainability goals may be approached through social and technical paths and describes some useful theory for both practitioners and academics pursuing a better understanding of what it might take to innovate with sustainability as a central driver. The organizational model focuses on three levels: theory, domain, and results. Some technical domain tools include the use of job mapping, customer sessions and concept matrices. These center activity on the innovation sweet spot and provide disciplined, structured processes to maximize the cost to value ratio in product, service or business model design. Social domain tools include leadership traits around core values, modeling & collaboration; these support learning organizations and organizational creativity.
