Loren R. Spielman is Assistant Professor Classical Judaism and the Schusterman Teaching Fellow at Portland State University. His scholarly interests center on the political, social and cultural history of Jews living under Persian, Greek and Roman rule (roughly 500 BCE-640 CE). Professor Spielman is currently working on a book which examines the pivotal role that Jewish attitudes towards Greek and Roman theater, athletic competition, gladiators and other popular entertainments played in the formation of Jewish identity in Roman Palestine.
Professor Spielman recieved his PhD in Ancient Judaism from the Graduate School of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Prior to joining the Judaic Studies faculty at PSU, Spielman was a visiting instructor in the religion department at Wesleyan University. He has taught courses on Rabbinic literature, Hebrew Bible, early Biblcial interpretation and the history and popular culture of Jews in the ancient world.
