Dr. Cheriel has served in various key leadership roles in Oregon government and has overseen research, planning, and policy programs. He has served as principal investigator and project director on a number of funded grants as well as managed budgets for various state agencies and for the City of Seattle. He served as a trustee for Group Health of Puget Sound. He has worked with minority populations in various capacities. Currently, he is the Principal Investigator of the Northwest Health Foundation-funded project, "Arthritis Among Hispanics in Oregon: Developing Community Solutions."
