Portland State presents Puccini
This year’s PSU opera is “La Rondine” (The Swallow) by Giacomo Puccini, the story of a woman who is torn between the security of an older man and the excitement of a younger lover.
“La Rondine” debuted in 1916 while World War I raged throughout Europe – a fact that hampered its early popularity. Since then it has been revived by major opera companies throughout the world, and is known for its soaring lyricism.
Originally set in the 19th Century, PSU’s production places “La Rondine” in vibrant 1950s Paris, with costumes and sets that reflect the period. The role of Ruggero, the young lover, is played by Zachary Borichevsky, an up-and-coming American tenor who has been performing around the United States and in Italy.
