Portland State's Newest Building
Stop by the center of campus and find Portland State's newest building, the Academic and Student Recreation Center. The Rec Center is now open and according to director of campus recreation Alex Accetta, this building was created to provide additional exercise and engagement opportunities for the campus community.
"The vision was not just about putting a roof over a basketball court, but to really help establish a culture of health on campus," said Accetta. "This building will also provide a place for students to meet and be a part of the PSU community, outside of the classroom."
Not only is the Rec Center in the center of campus, it's also located on the busiest transportation hub in Portland, the Urban Center Plaza, where the Yellow and Green MAX lines, Portland Streetcar, and TriMet buses all meet. Bike commuters can ride to campus and use the facility to take a shower before work or class.
"The combination of these elements makes the Plaza and the Rec Center a commuters' paradise," said Accetta. "It also emphasizes PSU's commitment to alternative transportation."
This building was built from the ground up with sustainability in mind. Its rain water harvesting system, geothermal heating and cooling, elliptical workout machines that generate electricity, and much more earned Portland State another Gold LEED certification.
"All in all, this building surpasses everyone's expectations," said Accetta. "It's gorgeous."
