Making a global difference
A group of Portland State students traveled to Panama this summer to volunteer to help local villagers under a program called Global Brigades. Twenty four PSU students provided medical care to the Santa Librada community in the first week, and 15 students built greenhouses for the Piriati Embera community during the second week.
Global Brigades has been serving the world through their volunteer service programs since 2004. They are one of the largest student-led global health and sustainable development organizations in the world. The coordinators, advisers and service groups are all student volunteers.
The university does not help fund any of the group's expenses, so Global Brigades raises everything on their own. The students organized fundraising events – an art gallery and several salsa nights – to finance the trip.
