Research and partnerships pivotal to PSU's rise
Research becomes priority for PSU
As funding for research becomes increasingly competitive, a long history of collaboration and partnership at PSU is proving to be a major advantage. In 2010, PSU established the office of Research and Strategic Partnerships to support a growing research portfolio and strengthen partnerships with business, local and regional governments, schools, non-profits and others.
Today, PSU has emerged as an influential leader of the up-and-coming class of public, urban-serving research universities, thanks to the initiative of researchers and the cultivation of strategic partnerships across the Portland region.
Projects drive tech breakthroughs
With more than 4,000 employees and nearly 30,000 students, PSU plays an integral role in the regional economy. By supporting bioscience, clean technology and information technology start-ups, the university is developing key metro industries. At the PSU Business Accelerator, for instance, start-up companies and university spinouts are provided resources, connections, offices, and labs, while working with PSU faculty and students to perfect their craft. One such company, Pacific Light Technologies is creating solutions for using high-output energy efficient LED lighting in residential and commercial settings.
OHSU partnership will reshape higher education
When Oregon Health & Science University's Advanced Imaging Research Center needed a chemist to develop the next generation of contrast agents, it teamed with PSU to create a join appointment, with access to PSU graduate students and research colleagues as well as OHSU's state-of-the-art imaging facility.
Bigger things are ahead: the Collaborative Life Sciences Building will open along the South Waterfront in 2014, becoming the new home of the PSU Chemistry department, OHSU expansion including a cancer research center and Oregon State's School of Pharmacy.
