2012-2013 China Seminar Series
The Chinese Dream and the American Dream: What Can Chinese Planners Learn from American Urban Development? - Shihui Liu, Qi Liu
Event Date and Location
Thursday, June 13, 12:00-1:30pm - Urban Center Room 220
From the presenters: "As two planners from China, we experienced and gained so much in the past 10 months. In our last seminar, we try to pull together our thoughts and make a brief conclusion. We will start with the "American Dream" and its influences on the country's urban development. In our view, the keywords here include the auto industry, highway system, suburbanization, skyscrapers, migrants and so on. Recently, the 'China Dream' has been put forward by new Chinese President Xi but mostly remains a concept. There are many things left for us to understand about the concept and reify. However, in our opinion, our two countries share a similar path to pursue in terms of the balance between efficiency and quality in urban development by perfecting planning in its all stages of concept-designing, the planning process, policy-making and implementation. We will talk about some American experiences and lessons that may give some inspirations to reify the 'China Dream' in terms of topics such as eminent domain, reuse and sustainability, collaborative planning and governance. Also, the last part will be left for open discussions and questions and we hope to gain more advice and inspirations from you."
