May 5, 2014— Portland State University President Wim Wiewel today appointed three new members of the governing board of the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies (IMS) at PSU. The new members are:
• Dan Saltzman, Portland City Council;
• Lynn Valenter, vice chancellor for finance and operations, Washington State University Vancouver;
• Lori DeRemer, mayor of Happy Valley, OR.
“These three appointments represent the broad partnerships that characterize the mission of the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies,” said Wiewel.
IMS convenes regional partners, curates credible information and conducts objective policy research to stimulate dialogue and action that address critical regional issues. The IMS governing board includes elected leaders, citizens and experts who represent the entire metropolitan region.
“Few organizations encompass the entire metro area in their consideration of issues and opportunities,” said Michael Sykes, IMS board chair and city manager of Forest Grove.
Rob Drake, IMS board member and city manager of Cornelius, helped to recruit the new members to the IMS Board. “We are excited to welcome these three dynamic and experienced people to our board, “ he said.
Each new member offers a different set of experiences and insights. Saltzman is the City of Portland’s commissioner for the Portland Housing Bureau and Portland Fire and Rescue. “I look forward to engaging with the IMS Board and staff regarding issues important to the region. The impacts of issues like housing, public safety, and economic opportunity cross city and even state lines,” said Saltzman.
Valenter has been a leader at WSU Vancouver since 1997, and currently serves as the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations. “WSU-Vancouver welcomes the opportunity to partner with PSU in its research, analysis, and engagement on regional issues, she said.
DeRemer, Mayor of Happy Valley, has served on a number of regional advisory boards and said, “I am glad to add a Clackamas County voice to the IMS Board.”
