Meg Merrick first worked for Ethan Seltzer at the Institute during the summer of 1995, doing research on the origins of the urban growth boundary. In 1997, she returned to the Institute to coordinate the PSU@HOME project bringing geographic information systems (GIS) technology to various community groups throughout the region. Since then, the project has evolved into the Community Geography project that is focusing on citizen empowerment through training in GIS as well as asset mapping methods. MegO primary research interest is in looking at how geographic understandings through the use of GIS technology influence community building at the grassroots level. Meg is also the design editor for Metroscape magazine, the Institute's flagship publication.
Meg received BS and MS degrees in Geography and a Certificate in Urban Studies from Portland State University, and is currently working on here Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Planning. Meg also attended the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and the School of Visual Arts in New York where she focused on fine art and graphic design. Before coming to Portland State, she was a freelance graphic designer, a sometime radio announcer at KBOO, and raised three sons. Meg and her family have resided in Portland since 1977.
