A gathering to honor the lives of Nohad A. Toulan and his wife Dirce Toulan will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in PSU’s Smith Memorial Center Ballroom.

The Toulans passed away in Uruguay on Oct. 28.

Nohad Toulan was a distinguished professor and dean emeritus of the College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA). He joined PSU in 1972, and led the expansion of disciplines that created CUPA. He became the college’s first dean in 1976, and held that position until his retirement in 2004. Dirce Toulan was an architect, planner and former Fulbright Scholar. She led the effort to support CUPA’s library, which bears her name.

“They will forever be the first couple of the College of Urban and Public Affairs,” said Carlos Crespo, interim dean of the college. “But just as they worked together to build the college and Portland State University, they also worked tirelessly to make the Portland metropolitan region the wonderful place that it is. Their commitment and contribution to service, to community, and to higher education leaves us all in their debt.”

Please RSVP to tiede@pdx.edu if you are able to attend the memorial. If you would like to make a gift in their memory to the Nohad and Dirce Toulan Endowed Scholarship, please visit our PSU Foundation website:https://www.foundation.pdx.edu/publicgift/toulan_memorial.jsp
