Mayor Charlie Hales wants to overhaul the city's urban renewal program. Portland State University President Wim Wiewel endured 11 rounds of public hearings before getting city leaders to create a $169 million urban renewal area around Portland State.
Hales wants to pull the plug on it and refocus the city's urban renewal program on blighted areas while steering more money to the city and county.
In an exclusive interview on Monday, Wiewel said the urban renewal area is critical to the university's ability to meet its state-backed goals.
I asked Wiewel about his willingness to work with Hales. If the urban renewal area goes away, the city and the Portland Development Commission have other economic development tools that can help fund Portland State's growth.
