Instructional Specialist Family

Overview

This family includes a wide range of positions. People in these positions serve as subject matter experts providing technical assistance and/or specialized training in, or knowledge concerning institutional programs, internal systems, processes or projects. Job responsibilities include training a variety of constituencies and/or providing technical assistance in support of programs or projects.

Qualifications

Typically minimum qualifications range from a baccalaureate degree with limited professional experience at entry level to a master's degree and/or relevant experience and expertise.

BA/BS with 1-3 years of related experience.

BA/BS with 3+ years of related experience

Masters with 1+ years of related experience.

Provides support/maintenance to established programs and projects. Works from existing guidelines, information and systems.

Using existing software creates printed and multimedia materials in support of instructional or informational projects.

Provides diverse programmatic support for technical assistance, on-site training, and conference activity.

In addition to Level 1 responsibilities other duties include:

May establish training and assistance programs for projects or varying programs.

Possesses expert knowledge in a specialized subject area such as scientific applications of research, financial practices, legislative initiatives, health issues, pedagogical strategies, or management theory and stays current with changes and developments in the subject matter.

Provides technical assistance and problem solving help utilizing subject matter expertise and negotiating skills.

Provides leadership, technological and marketing expertise in developing the design of, policy guidelines for, and management of distance learning classes or a multi-faceted, complex website involving a variety of constituencies.

Budgetary Authority No budgetary authority.

Smaller discretionary funds must be routed and approved through proper channels and follow departmental guidelines.

May develop budgetary proposals for programs or projects.

May manage approved budgets. Some discretionary control over expenditures.

Contacts and Communication Primary contacts are with individual students and peers in own unit or other departments within the university. Other contacts may include some outside agencies and occasional groups. Follows standardized information and procedures. Interacts and communicates with a broad range of people in individual and group meetings within and outside of the university. Initiates and develops relations with outside groups and agencies. May cultivate sponsors/partners for program(s) or program activities.
Program Coordination Assists in coordination of programs or project elements. Could be responsible for a smaller program and/or project(s).

Assists with providing programmatic support.

Coordinates parts of, or manages various elements of programs or projects.

Guides, manages, and expedites responsibilities and sets priorities.

May have responsibility for overall project/program management.

Decision Making Makes decisions and takes action using standardized guidelines. May seek supervisory support. Makes decisions and takes action using guidelines with the ability to interpret and make decisions based on professional judgment.
Complexity General nature of work involves standardized procedures, processes and knowledge base. Work involves situations requiring adaptive responses due to changing priorities and unusual circumstances. Frequent requirement to make decisions and balance priorities.

May direct activities of student workers.

Close to moderate supervision is received.

Work is reviewed more frequently.

May involve the direction and/or supervision of student workers (including undergrad and grad students) and/or one classified/unclassified staff member.

Creativity/Design May suggest changes to existing policies and procedures within standardized program guidelines. Some requirement to innovate or create new policies, procedures or new programs.
