First, it is important to know that PSU pays 95% of the premiums for the core benefits of medical, dental and vision for Unclassified employees who are contracted to work at least half time for the academic year, and their eligible dependents. Employees pay 5% of the premium cost.
Classified employees must work full time in order to have the University pay 95% of the premiums for medical, dental and basic life insurance for the employee as well as their eligible dependents. Classified employees working over half time, but less than full time, are eligible for benefits, but share the premium cost prorated based on hours worked. In summary, PSU pays the monthly medical and dental premiums for those who are eligible—an amazing benefit when most employers are cutting back on health coverage.

PSU Faculty Association (AFT) members working less than half time also have an opportunity to enroll in health insurance if they are currently uninsured or self-insured through an individual policy without health benefits from another source. Enrollment deadlines apply: Please note you must enroll within 30 days of your eligibility, which is usually your date of hire, but may be a job change if you transfer into a benefits eligible position. Benefits start on the first of the month following online enrollment or receipt of your paper enrollment forms in Human Resources. In other words, enroll right away after your first day as an eligible employee.
Medical coverage includes medical, vision, and prescription drug benefits. There are several plan choices for full-time employees as well as a choice of subsidized lower-cost, lower-benefit plans for part-time Classified employees whose full-time equivalency is less than full time, but equal or greater than half time. Our Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) offers employees and family members confidential counseling and referral services to assist with personal and/or work-related concerns. The first three visits per issue are either discounted or provided at no cost to the employee. You may call them directly to make an appointment.
