University Housing Living Learning Communities (LLCs) at Portland State
University were created
with first year students in mind. Portland
State's residence program
helps new students succeed in their first year of college. A successful first
year of school is essential in setting the tone for the rest of your college
career.
The First Year Experience (FYE) program is designed to make the first year
at university easier for new students by building a support network of peers
and providing a nurturing environment with all the necessary resources, while
the Global Village program broadens the horizon of everyone involved with the
program, in addition to providing a support network of peers and supporting
every resident's academic career. The brand new Russian Immersion program is a
unique University Housing opportunity for intermediate to advanced speakers of
Russian. The program includes international students from Russia as well as
other Russian-speaking members of the PSU community. It's everything you need
to fully immerse yourself in the language and culture of Russia.
For more information about each program, please read the short program
descriptions below and contact the University Housing office if you have any
questions.
FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE The First Year Experience (FYE) program is located on the lower floors of
the Ondine and Broadway
Buildings. Resident
Assistants and Learning Communities Assistants reside on the floors of the
First Year Experience Program to help first year students get to know one
another, the university and the city. Educational and social programs are held
regularly, and assistance is available to aid students in navigating the
University System.
FYE Clusters: Within the larger FYE program, there are two
smaller FYE Clusters that require enrollment in a particular FYE-only FRINQ
section. The FYE-only classes have a unique programming design that enhances
your educational classroom experience through both educational and social
programming within the residence halls. This arrangement reinforces what you
are learning inside the classroom and provides first year students with the
opportunity to meet other students who share similar interests, classes, and
social activities.
The two Clusters for 2009-2010 are:

A meal plan is required for all FYE residents and is included in the cost of
the program. To learn more about the Dining options available for First Year
Experience residents please visit the Dining page of this website.
GLOBAL VILLAGE It is the mission of the Global Village program to foster the development
of each student's intercultural awareness, communication skills, and academic
success by encouraging discourse and shared experience among a diverse
community of peers. We recognize that the success of this mission depends upon
the commitment of each Global Village member to create, maintain and contribute
to a safe and thriving community through dialogue and actions. Global Village
is located on the top floor of Stephen Epler. There is no required meal plan,
though residents are welcome to contact PSU Dining and sign up for a meal plan.
RUSSIAN IMMERSION The Russian Immersion program on the fifth floor of Stephen Epler Hall is
an intensive Living Learning Community open to all students who are
intermediate to advanced speakers of Russian (approximately third-year level
Russian or above). Residence here is also very appropriate for students from
Russian families and native speakers. It is a small community of students whose
goals are to expand their opportunities to speak Russian beyond the classroom
and to share in related activities that are coordinated by the participants
with the Russian-speaking Teaching Assistant and Resident Assistant.
