Beginning April 16, PSU will participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). PSU participates in this survey every 2 to 3 years. The NSSE provides valuable information on Portland State's students engagement with the campus, as well as information on student engagement at our peer institutions. We hope that you will encourage freshman and senior students to complete the survey. The results will provide important data that we can use to support student success and improve the educational experiences of our students.
Basic information related to the NSSE is found below. If you have further questions about the NSSE, please feel free to contact Kelli Dunlap at firstname.lastname@example.org In the Office of Institutional Research and Planning. Thank you for supporting this effort.
Frequently Asked Questions about NSSE
What is NSSE?
The NSSE is a nationally-recognized survey designed to gather information about the nature and quality of undergraduate student experiences. NSSE collects information from hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that support learning and personal development. Results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. In addition, NSSE provides participating institutions with reports that compare their students' responses to those at peer institutions.
Who is being asked to participate in NSSE 2013?
PSU freshmen and seniors enrolled Spring Term 2013
How will students be notified?
Invitations to participate will be sent to students via their PSU email accounts, beginning April 16th; the invitation will be made on behalf of President Wiewel. Reminder messages will be sent on the following dates:
What does the NSSE ask?
The NSSE asks students about their in- and out-of-class activities, what they feel they have gained from classes, their assessment of the quality of interactions with faculty and students, and their participation in other educational activities (e.g. undergraduate research, study abroad, and internships).
How will the data be used?
PSU is dedicated to ensuring that data, especially those from student assessment and surveys, is analyzed, distributed, and acted upon by various university departments to ensure continuous, quality program improvements. Summary reports of findings will be made available on the Office of Institutional Research and Planning website and through the Enrollment Management and Student Affairs office.
