Nora Wendl, Architecture faculty, co-organized the symposium Strange Utility: Architecture Toward Other Ends held at Portland State, April 26-27. Her co-organizer was Isabelle Loring Wallace, a University of Georgia contemporary art faculty member. With contributions from 14 scholars and architects, the symposium recognized the contemporary currency of utility, and sought unexpected ways of defining this term within and with respect to the built environment. Keynote speakers included internationally recognized architects and scholars Jimenez Lai, Philippe Rahm, and Jill Stoner. The event was hosted by the PSU School of Architecture and supported by the Institute for Sustainable Solutions, Speakers Board, and Littman Gallery, which exhibited the work of MacArthur award-winning artist Inigo Manglano-Ovalle.
