For the fifth-consecutive year, Portland State University’s curriculum ranks among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine’s “America’s Best Colleges 2007,” on newsstands this Monday, features Portland State under the section “Academic Programs—Programs to Look For” in five categories: First-Year Experiences, Internships/Co-Ops, Learning Communities, Senior Capstone and Service Learning.

This is the fifth year that the U.S. News Best Colleges issue has listed schools with “outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success.” U.S. News asked education experts from groups such as the Association of American Colleges and Universities to identify program categories, and then asked college presidents, chief academic officers and deans of admission to nominate up to ten schools for each category, with those listed most often making the list.

“This ranking affirms the decisions made by PSU's 25,000 students to attend Oregon's only international urban university. When students work in interdisciplinary teams on real-world problems, the educational experience is enhanced and the community benefits,” said Portland State President Daniel O. Bernstine. “Recognition by U.S. News & World Report, placing Portland State University among the top universities in the nation in five 'Programs to Look for' categories, is a result of the excellent work by our faculty and students and demonstrates the value of a PSU education.”

Portland State University is known nationally for a curriculum focused on connecting the campus to the metro community, providing students and faculty opportunities to engage with organizations and industry throughout the area, and for enhancing both the quality of education and quality of life in the region. Other schools acknowledged this year along with Portland State include Brown, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford and Yale.
