Profile: Annette Jolin

Dr. Jolin earned her Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Criminology at Portland State University in 1985. She joined the Criminology and Criminal Justice faculty at Portland State University in 1990. From 2001 to 2008, she was chair of the division. Dr. Jolin oversaw the division's name change from Administration of Justice to Criminology and Criminal Justice, which was accompanied by major curriculum changes in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. She was also instrumental in the formation of the online program, which to date is PSU's only fully online degree program.

Dr. Jolin's research interests have been shaped by two decisions in her life. The first was her decision to immigrate to the United States from Germany in 1967, following a year as an exchange student at Marquette University. The second was her decision to join the Portland Police Bureau as one of Portland's first female patrol officers in 1973. Much of her research compares German and U.S. policing strategies relating to prostitution and domestic violence. Her research has been published in Germany as well as in the United States and led to a Fulbright assignment in Germany in 2003. Both substantive areas of interest-prostitution and domestic violence-stem directly from her experiences as police patrol officer, as did her current research focus on the intersection between female victimization and offending. A strong community focus has been present throughout Dr. Jolin's academic career. She has taught in prisons, at police academies, and has been involved in local domestic violence prevention, police accountability, and racial profiling initiatives.
