Paul Timmermans completed his doctorate at the University of Denver (November 2011), where he took the fields of Political Theory and International Relations, after having studied in the Department of Political Science at Leiden University. In the dissertation, he wrote on the ambivalence of sovereignty. He also has research interests in political justice, the recognition of states, foreign policy and international law, and specific theories such as those of Machiavelli and Hobbes. While visiting Tuebingen University, he taught on the prospects for United Nations reform (international constitutional theory). His concentration remains the history of German political thought. Timmermans teaches a survey course at Portland State University: International Politics.
