Mel Gurtov, B.A., M.I.A., Ph.D.

Mel's work has mainly concerned foreign-policy and national-security analysis, in East Asia, the U.S., and globally. The perspective he has developed is "global humanism," a critical, humane-values centered approach that emphasizes peace, social equity and environmental protection.


Degrees: B.A. in U.S. History, 1963, Columbia University; M.I.A. and Certificate, 1965, School of International Affairs and East Asian Institute, Columbia University; Advanced Chinese language study, Stanford University Center of National Taiwan University, 1966; Ph.D., Political Science, 1970, University of California, Los Angeles.

Teaching and Research Areas: His teaching and research specialties are China and East Asian politics, international relations, and security policy; U.S. foreign policy, with particular reference to the Third World; the international politics of global issues; and international conflict resolution.

Published Works: He has published books and articles in each of those areas, including China Under Threat: The Politics of Strategy and Diplomacy, The United States Against the Third World, and Global Politics in the Human Interest, the latter translated into three languages. Recent publications include:

  • Confronting the Bush Doctrine (Routledge, 2005), co-edited with Peter Van Ness

  • China's Security: The New Roles of the Military (Rienner, 1998)

  • Pacific Asia? Prospects for Security and Cooperation in East Asia (Rowman & Littlefield, 2002)

Other Positions: Dr. Gurtov was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in South Korea in 1994, and is editor-in-chief of Asian Perspective, an international quarterly journal published in Seoul.
