Dale Hess received a B.A. in history from Wheaton College (IL) in 1959; a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in political science from Miami University (OH) in 1963, and a Ph. D in political science from the University of Oregon in 1974. With the exception of a sojourn in Oregon politics (see below), he has taught all his adult life: in both elementary and secondary public schools, and in both public and private colleges and universities at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. He was involved in Oregon state government from 1983-1997 as a legislative assistant, agency lobbyist, and policy analyst. He taught at PSU briefly before his political sojourn (1980) and returned to PSU after it (1998 to the present). He regularly teaches courses in American government and politics, public policy, and political psychology. He is a slow but frequent runner and has had a lifelong fascination with the sources and uses of the English language.
