Background

Professor Shortell earned his B.A. at Loyola Marymount University and his M.A. and Ph.D. at University of California, San Diego. He previously taught at California State University, Northridge.

 

Research Focus

Dr. Shortell is interested in understanding the relationship between law and the broader political system, with a particular focus on the interactions between law and society, law and elections, and federalism.

Publications & Awards
Professor Shortell is the author of Rights, Remedies, and the Impact of State Sovereign Immunity (SUNY Press 2008) as well as articles in Election Law Journal and Judicature. In addition, he has contributed book chapters on executive immunity and the role of the chief justice.
