Meet Blair Thomas

Blair Thomas, M.P.H. Class of 2012

"Immediately, I was surrounded by people who were willing to challenge me to think
critically and creatively about issues that were affecting people in Oregon and throughout
the country,” Blair Thomas says of his experience at Portland State University's Master of
Public Health: Health Management and Policy program. "I wanted a program that would
enhance my future career aspirations while providing immediate dividends as I studied.
I was serving on several boards such as the Oregon Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness
and Sports, and wanted a degree that would help me make more meaningful contributions
based on what I was learning and the connections that I was making."

“What interested me about Portland State’s graduate program was the reputation that the graduate program has nationally," Blair commented, when asked why he chose Portland State University’s program. "According to U.S. News and World Report, since the program’s inception, it has consistently ranked among the best in the country and is filled with faculty who have had sustained success in their own fields. I wanted to learn from some of the best and Portland State offered that opportunity.”

Currently, Blair is pursuing a Doctorate degree in Public Administration and Policy at the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy at Florida State University. “Portland State allowed me to grow as a student by providing me opportunities to make connections with some of the brightest minds in Oregon and to identify and engage with the key elements of the public policy process. From an academic standpoint, I am extremely confident that the entire program prepared me for the rigors that await me in the next phase of my academic career in Tallahassee,” Blair explained.

"I would like to impact students in the classroom as a professor in some capacity and challenge the next wave of leaders to think about health policy, to think of solutions not through a political party spectrum, but how to create better outcomes for everyone regardless of political party affiliation," Blair responded, when asked about his plans for the future. "I want to pursue career opportunities that impact others and make my community and those surrounding it a better place to live, whether it is in the classroom, on a laptop computer, or collaborating with leaders and stakeholders to make this country and this world a better place.”
